JIAO (3-month student project)

2015, Game/Narrative Designer & 2D artist

 

JIAO is a musical narrative experience in an ink-water art style. Based on a Chinese mythology, it presents a life evolution of JIAO. It was a 3-month project in ENJMIN, which was produced by a 6-person group.

 

--  The experience tells the evolution of "Fish - Jiao - Dragon" refer to a process from birth to death.

--  The main mechanic of JIAO is really simple: Eat the items and grow up, kill enemies and plant flowers.

     But differently, every item represents an different instrument. Each time the avatar eats an item, it elongates the body, at the same time one music track of this item instrument will be added to the background music. 

​

--  The story contains 5 levels: Birth, Maturity, Chaos, Death. The key of passing to next level is eating an item. In each level, there are two items and different number of enemy. According to the different choice of item, the background music will also be different at last.

In order to correspond the ink-water graphic style and realize a fluide experience like drawing, the camera has a top - down vision and follows flatly the avatar, as well as the "finger control" -- mainly the player uses his finger to "drag" the avatar, and uses a small dash to kill the enemy. The ink is the life source in the game, when the avatar has no more ink, it will die.
